Default Interesting Article

My apologies if this has been posted before. I saw this article today and thought this was an interesting (odd) comparison.

I enjoyed reading that.

Those big, squishy American land yachts were great cars in their own way. I've always liked them. The models in this particular article are not my first choices but they were great nevertheless.

Jaguars offered a different type of luxury.

Ya, if you want to remember what cars handled like back then, watch a few old episodes of "Rockford Files". Those cars bounced and wallowed all around.

There's so many good quotes in this article. I love the last one (which sums up the comparison) "... it depends on if you are a rider or a driver"

Also, how about that 429 in the T-Bird making a whopping 212hp!

Yeah, that was when lowering compression and detuning was the easiest path to emissions compliance. Plus, making this a double whammy, the horsepower rating system was changed from SAE Gross to SAE Net which naturally resulted in much lower "advertised" horsepower ratings.

When horsepower went from gross to net the advertised HP was cut about in half. I assume we are still on the "net" measurement system. So my SUV that has 400 horsepower would be something like 800 HP back in the 60's. When I was in high school my girlfriend's brother had a 442 that would go from zero to 60 in six seconds. My 4774 pound SUV does zero to 60 in 5.4 seconds. That's from a 3 litrer v6 ... that's 183 cubic inches. So performance wise these are definitely the good old days.

But aesthetically speaking my Jaguar is sumptuous and stirs my soul. My SUV is ..... just an SUV.
