In a USA market Series III....
- Flatter seat design , with a 'semi-bucket seat' configuration in the rear
- More heavily figured wood trim
- Different door trim panels with inlaid wood strips
- Higher grade "AutoLux" leather
- Flush mounted dashboard gauges
- Plush/wooly/furry floor mats
- Rear reading lamps
- More leather content in interior
- Rear head rests (perhaps only 1986-87? I can't remember)
- Rear extension to the center console
- Color coordinated (rather than always black) upper console trim (1987 only?)
That's all I can think of at the moment. others will chime in.
Cheers

I have an 86 VDP and it has everything Doug mentions PLUS stereo speakers are mounted in the door pockets additional leather was used on seats. Mine has Doeskin interior and the top of the console is black (factory original ) the 87s have the same color as the rest of the console, (i think) I have noticed on some 87s . Also they have heavily burled dark walnut on the ski slope matching the fascia / dashboard. Book matched veneer - on fascia as are the door panel wood inserts.. Earlier cars had leather ( again I think)Then there is a Van Den Plas emblem (script) on the boot lid. I have over the years squirreled away parts for VDP . I managed to score some "as new" interior door panels in the same color as I have on my car but also have 2 extra VDP wood inserts sets for the door panels, I got them prior to the "as new" complete door panels find. If anyone is looking / wants them contact me /make offer off site.

The main thing that the VDP car shares with the standard car is the dash and console layout and the headliner. Virtually everything else is an upgraded version in the Vanden Plas - better wood, better leather and lots more of it - the entire seat, not just the seat facing, leather on the door panels. Stitched leather armrests and all the rest that Doug and Alyn have mentioned...oh, one thing they have NOT mentioned: the VDP seats are much LESS comfortable than the xj6 and Sovereign seats!
