Default Jaguar muffler tips

Sorry I had nothing to do so I got my collection of Jaguar muffler tips to polish. They are all stainless steel, not chromed. Check them out, I change them often in both cars so nobody recognizes me.

Yup, but, I must admit I've done it. That and other was or can be shiny!! I had an arbor shaft and polishing wheels, various pastes, and
one of my best pieces was a copper kettle, shined to brilliance!!
Dear departed wifey impressed!!

This house has some pre WWII vestiges. The personnel door
has a skeleton key lock. No key when we bought the place.
Lo and behold, the local hardware had a new mechanism,
almost exactly like it. and with keys!!! I redid the install.
One of the original cast brass plates remained and the brass door handles. They polished beautifully. Wifey again, impressed!!!

Alas, they need some polish and elbow grease....

Not bored enough yet...

Lots of weed whacking to go. And, looks like more lumber jack
work Two big limbs on the Bay tree done for...

And, common labor, sorta. Dumping old papers from former office...
Two banker boxes at a time. In to the recycle can.

Carl

Raising an old thread here - my XJC has a 2 1/4" exhaust system but has the standard 1 7/8"-2" exhaust tips - basically the same as in the OPs first pic - the 85 XJ6 style.

On the cars last service, the mechanic indicated they were probably restricting flow a little from the larger dia exhaust system. Been looking to see where I might get some larger diameter tips in the original style but not having any luck - the larger advertised ones are in fact the same diameter as the standard ones.

Clearly I can get any aftermarket tip of the correct size but would prefer an original look.

Any suggestions on where I might try to get 2 1/4" to 2 1/2" tips from?

Thanks

Garry

I'm in a similar boat; I have 2.25" back to the rear seats and the factory style & size system the rest of the way to the back. I decided it works for now but I'll be changing it soon. It's important to me to keep the S-curve tail pipes because I think they are an iconic part of the back of the XJ's.
When it comes time to re-do my exhaust, I'm going to pick up 4 of these and cut/weld them so I still have S-curve exhaust tips but in the appropriate diameter. I've never been able to find them the factory ones in the size I need.

I can assure you that this slight reduction in diameter will have absolutely no effect on power output!

Well maybe but most larger systems also include larger pipe endings - does not seem logical to put on a larger dia system to improve flow only then to cut it back at the very end - but then I admit I dont know.

Thanks

the XJ40, the Series 3 XJ-12, and the V12 XJ-S came with the smaller diameter tips from the factory.
I think they call it Back Pressure.

Yes but experts now say they should be the same diameter as the system. The requirement for back pressure in an exhaust has now been disputed - always wondered why some engines like a merlin V12 never had back pressure.

Thanks for the input

It is a question of whether the small change in the pipe diameter at the end of a long exhaust system will have any effect on power. As Roger Bywater mentioned in his book on engine technology, a Ferrari Formula One engine put 900 bhp though an exhaust pipe 2.5 inches in diameter at 15,000 rpm! So a lazy V12 is not going to be restricted by a half inch reduction in pipe diameter at the end of an (in effect) 2.65 litre 6 cylinder engine cruising at 75 mph. See chapter 7:
https://www.jagweb.com/aj6eng/techbook/index.php

https://www.jagweb.com/aj6eng/techbook/Chapter7.pdf

Exhaust pressure pulses are the key to having a driveable efficient normally aspirated engine at modest rpms. A Merlin, being supercharged, this was not relevant. Engines designed to do one specific thing (eg race at high revs and produce maximum power, give a fighter aircraft maximum speed) are not relevant comparisons for a car engine which has to provide power and torque over a large rev range, work quietly and tick over smoothly.
