If it were mine, and its not, I would simply drain the fluid, either via the drain plug (if it has one), or the dipstick tube securing nut.
Then refill with fresh fluid, go for a 50km drive, as many gearchanges as possible, drain it again, refill it again, repeat this until the colour of the draining fluid is the same, or very close to, the colour of what you are pouring in. This is usually about 6 times on these older transmissions with the larger amount of fluid being contained in the converter.
Then drop the pan, wash or replace the filter, refill again, and forget for 12 months.
This "sometimes' will sort that down change noise, but not always. The BW12 (also known as an FMX), is a very tough cast iron transmission, and failures are rare, except for 2nd gear band, which does fail with age and fluid neglect.
