When I was a kid at home, the first cold day all the cats were crowded around the dryer vent near the back door. Otherwise, they were found in a fur ball anywhere they could find a relatively protected spot out of the wind.
Cats don't like rain either. The first rain of the season they were treading carefully across the yard, nearly walking on their tippy toes trying to avoid getting their feet wet.
If they actually got wet (heaven forbid) they found the nearest dry spot, shook vigorously and repeatedly until they were Almost dry, and then curled up in a ball to wait for the rain to end.
It's already cold in Northern California, and we've had a couple good rains. I don't take Nix out in such weather, in fact, if there's a cloud in the sky, she gets to stay home. She doesn't like to get wet. Cold is OK, but Not wet.
She has a very nice bed, protected from wind and rain, just warm enough so she doesn't suffer from the cold (Spoiled cat! Doesn't know what Real cold is!). Within the next few days (probably Monday) she'll be put to bed for the duration of Winter so she can sleep in peace until the first clear day when she'll be on the prowl again.
I think winter might be that couple of days I used the heater. The time it took to sort is probably more than the time I used the heater in total last winter. But I like everything to work.
