I had a hell of a time doing the valve covers a few weeks ago. There were no copper washers in this section and instead a metal bridge piece. It was pretty mangled when I took it off, so I removed it and went with copper washers.
Of course, the only area it's leaking is here. They are new copper washers gooped up with a decent amount of Hylomar and torqued to specs. If you look closely, you can see some scratches in the surface that I believe is allowing the oil out.
Turns out that center "scratch" is actually a hairline crack! I found the original bridge piece and cleaned both surfaces well. Obviously worked well whoever did the repair originally (looked old). Question though, what do you think would work well (RTV, Jweld, etc)? Or more specifically, what would you think the grey mating material shown in the picture above was?
