Lock & Rock

Lock & Rock
again, novice at this so excuse my obvious mistakes&or-ignorance.
ok, XJ6, all wheel rolls fine but as soon as I bolt the flange thing at the back of the transmission unit to the propeller shaft thing (i.e. the circular plate with 4 bolt holes) the car (hand brake off) locks solid and will rock but no roll.
engine/auto 1985 installed in Series 2 body.
any ideas?
i'm puzzled

You may have attached the gearshift linkage incorrectly....but that shouldn't the cause of your not rolling problem.
The car should roll with the transmission in any position except "Park". Only "Park" will lock the transmission, assuming all is well inside the transmission, of course....which I beginning to wonder about
Cheers

Yeah, stuck in park, sounds like the culprit.
1. Climb under. disconnect the shift cable. See if you can move the lever on the transmission freely from position to position. N would be nice. Now, will wheels turn.
2. Park is accomplished by a pawl inside the transmision. it may taae a bit more force to release than the cable leverage will allow. Parking down hill against a stop can do this. Carefully apply some force, with the wheels in the air, hand brake off and see if that will disengage the pawl. I've heard tales of busting the pawl in other critters. Bye, bye Park position.
If the differential is an open unit, turning the wheels will do nothing. But, a drive shaft disconnect, just might release some torque and allow the pawl to disengage.

I'll try that in next few days. Should the circular flange on the back of the auto turn freely normally if in N?
oddly tho the 85 model the engine and transmission was extracted from did not have this problem, its only since I bolted the link between the auto and the shaft in the 74 body that it has occurred.
~ cheers

I wonder if the cable is seized or kinked?
Yes, the pictures suggest that the trans linkage is moving enough.
The transmission will lock in "P" and will roll with any other position selected. In other words, with the engine off, you could roll or push the car with the transmission in R-N-D-2-1 and the car would roll. Only in "P" is the transmission locked

I suspect the swaging on either end of the cable that secures the housing has failed.
The result is that the cable within the housing doesn't move, only the housing. Been there. Luckily in my driveway.
Solution: replace the cable. I got what was described as an improved version from Johns cars in Fort Worth. .
Beats a crunched pawl inside all to pieces....
Joke bodge: Cut a hole on the pan. attach a rod to the lever on the trans. skip 1/2 the monkey motions. Just joking....

just a few more picts, still puzzling me
gear stick itself is securely fastened .. not sure about the cord into the transmission tunnel.
the different in positions obtained manually by the gear lever and those obtained by using the shift stick itself are dramatically different. surely the shift stick should obtain the full same range of motion that is manually obtainable??
pushing the lever to far left
pushing the lever to far right
changing gear stick to 1st gear
taking gear stick into park position

indeed was the bolt in the transmission tunnel, missing, once attached i have with much profanity and insanity tries to reattach the gear cable end to the lever on the transmission,
its always out by an inch and the tightening or loosing of the locknuts by the gear stick seems to change effect each time,
the motion of the gear action seems to change from straight to curved to up and down... loosing mind ... any suggestion.. feels like shifting sands..
