LOST KEYS
#21
Went to another Jaguar dealer and the parts rep called Jaguar and he got a Key code. I explained to the rep that the key code I wanted was for the door lock, not the ignition.
He told me that Jaguar only had one key code for my 1985 XJ6. I believe that to be incorrect since the 85 has one key for the door/trunk/gas cove/glovebox and another for the ignition.
I explained to the rep that the door lock key had serrated edges on both sides of the key and that the ignition key was serrated on one side only therefore there should be 2 different key codes but he was adamant that Jaguar said there was only one Key code and that one key did the doors and ignition. WE ALL KNOW THAT IS NOT THE CASE WITH THE 85 XJ6.
Am I incorrect?

You are of course correct that there are 2 keys, 1 double sided (door, fuel cap, etc), & 1 single sided (ignition) as you describe. I have the same on my 86 XJ6.
However, I have a set of original keys on a fob from the original dealer that includes a small fibre disc bearing what I presume is the key code consisting of 2 letters and 3 numbers.
I wonder if the code works for both keys, choose the type of key, door or ignition, and the code works for both?
Just a thought.

The car probably came with three keys. Ignition, door, and valet. The valet key being the same as a door key except it would open doors only. I wouldn't open the trunk, gas doors, or glove box. I suspect this was achieved by leaving one or two tumblers out of those locks and one or two key 'cuts' blank on the valet key

In my days at a (non-Jaguar) parts department we made new keys all the time. We had books and charts listing key codes. The key code gave the correct key cuts or, if assembling a new lock, the correct tumblers to install in the lock cylinders. "Tumblers" being the tiny wafers inserted into the lock cylinder to make it unique.
Anyhow......
Back to Jaguars and speculation.....
I speculate that a single key code provided the correct 'formula' to cut all three keys. If appearing on a chart it might look like this:
3L56 key code
Ign 135678 (cut code for ignition key)
Dr 743145 (cut code for door key)
Vl 7431 (cut code for valet key)
(I have no idea how Jaguar key codes are formatted; the above is just to illustrate what I'm thinking)

Nix's original keys:
The one on the extreme left, the ignition key and driver door, had a rinky dink rubbery top which was torn and coming apart, and didn't exactly inspire confidence in its security, so I drilled it and put in the ring you see.
The center one is for the the trunk./boot and glove box.
The gold one unlocks the passenger door and gas caps.
Needless to say I took these to a lock smith after about 2 days' ownership and had 3 more sets made.

I guess this is just a Jaguar thing.
LnrB has 3 keys for her car. She posted that the key for the ignition also opens the driver door, one for the trunk and glove box and one for the passenger door and gas caps.
In my case, I had 2 keys. one for the ignition and the other for both door locks, trunk and gas caps.
@Ian: My locksmith told me 2 days ago that he had to special order the key blanks. I will get that information from him when he shows up.

To support a couple of the comments above...
My 84 XJ6 (UK car) came with two sets of keys
one set of two - Ignition & Doors (convex head to the key)
spare set of three - Ignition, Doors and Valet (concave head to the key)
Doors does boot (trunk), fuel fillers and glovebox as well
Valet does doors and fuel fillers
I had spares cut straight away...
I have actually used the valet/ignition combination when putting it on the French motor-rail service (drop off one evening, collect later the following day at the other end...)

My 1979 Series III has spare keys that I got at a local lock shop. They are made by iLCO which is a srandard brand carried by normal lock shops. The blank numbers are FT6R = ignition and BL6 = boot/doors/glove box/fuel caps. Not prety but cheap and easy. BTW, I bought an original Jaguar key blank for my 1987 from a guy in New England. The problem is that the originals are steel and not brass. Had to find someone that would cut a steel key then it took forever to file down the rough edges to get it to work smoothly.

Similar but not quite the same as my three. Elinor , I think the one on the right in your picture is a recut ona dfferent blank than the original.
And, thsnks, I do have one with the rubber thing you describe. Igntion/it came with the NOs ignition swirtch I got from David bogerto replace the worn out unit that game me issues.
No matrer. what works, works.

Hi,
The key codes ( as shown in the picture above ) are listed below, I found some of the original WASO rubber headed ignition blanks on Amazon or Ebay and had my smith make spares for my cars, they already had the door keys in stock ( place has been in business forever ).
I tried to find blanks for the valet keys but never could, just a possible Jag part number. I compared it to my regular key and it's cut exactly the same, the difference is that it's thicker which fits the door locks but is to fat to go in the other locks.
If anybody ever finds a source for these blanks please let me know. I'm not into the concourse events but would still like to have a full set of extra keys.
Ignition FT6R Original rubber headed key = WASO FZ / FR series
Doors etc BL6
Valet maybe Jag # JLM15601 ( Thicker than the BL6 ) Anyone have another number or source ?
Cheers,
Brian
