My '73 Series 1 XJ6 Thread
I have posted a bit here and there with questions about various issues, and figured it was about time to start one thread. Whether or not anyone is interested enough to look at this thread doesn't matter. It would be a good way for myself to gauge progress.
My Car: 1973 Jaguar Series 1
I purchased this car from a friend whom used to work on Jags in the 80s for the local dealer. The wealth of knowledge i have received from him is immense, and having a lot of the factory manuals and diagrams is a great resource, in my opinion. It wasn't running when I bought it, simply because he had just purchased it himself, and decided he didn't want to bother with it (he's a classic American truck guy at heart). I got it running in 2011 and drove it a little bit, but it was tricky. The lowpoint of driving it was having it die in traffic, around 5:30pm, and start seconds before the light turned green. I parked it a little over a year ago and haven't done much since. Well, seeing it sit in a field for the last year has bummed me out and i finally decided to work on it again. Filled it with gas, and about two gallons in it started spewing out. Long story short, fuel tank had an old liner, which was flaking out, as well as a couple holes in the bottom. Trying not to be the cheap-*** I once was, i bought a new Spectra tank and got it installed this weekend. It starts and runs but there is a serious lack of power and it almost stranded me on a test drive. I am confident it is the fuel filter, and plan on ordering one (or two) this week. Since I ran it with a VERY nasty tank, I'm going to pull the carbs this week and clean them up real well.
The plan:
Get it running correctly, paint it dark BRG, and fix all the misc. issues. I have a S3 VDP that I may rob the interior out of and replace my very badly deteriorated S1 interior. I know it won't be a direct fit, but I've heard it can be done. My VDP isn't running either, as I bought it with two bent valves and I'm pretty sure stuck injectors. I MAY swap heads and eventually find a triple SU setup for it, but haven't decided.
