Mystery bulb?

Mystery bulb?
Hi all, today when replacing the old cigar lighter, I found a bulb by the gear selector, but just laying there: it is connected to a pretty long wire but nothing else. It's not the bulb on the gear selector itself (it's still in situ). Any ideas where it goes or what it illumines?
Mine is a 1971 Series 1. I have done a fair bit of work on the car but this is the first time opening up the area around the gear lever.
I switched on the interior lights but the bulb did not light up. As you see from the photo, it is in a cradle that looks old but I don't know if it is stock.
Thanks for any help,
Graham

Larry, you are quite right! Odd thing is the replacement I got from SNG doesn't have that cut out in the sleeve but when I looked back at the old one (the sleeve was corroded and locked firm to the inner casing so I've had to use a grinder to get it out) there's a space and the little mounting housing (LnrB: yep, still attached) clips right in. How cool is that? Thanks!
I might try to cut a similar hole in the SNG sleeve so I can mount in the original bulb. If I am successful I'll post a picture (more likely I'll damage the sleeve). I might call Moss and see if their replacement part has the aperture for bulb mounting.
Anyway, thanks for solving the mystery! I had no idea Jaguar had such a cool detail on the car.
