If you have no fuel return system in operation, where is the blow-off going from the fuel rail pressure regulator ? The basic method of operation is the pump over-supplies fuel, and the pressure regulator on the fuel rail regulates the pressure in relation to manifold vacuum, with excess fuel blowing off back to the tank via the return system. The effect is that the fuel pressure differential over the manifold vacuum is always the same.
This sort of thing is no longer done with modern electronics able to control the fuel pum p directly, as on my own x350 model XJ6.
Anyway, I wish you luck with your car, and hope you get it fixed OK. These early EFI systems can be a bit troublesome and the age doesn't help.
