Need info on what I have.
I just acquired a 1973 Jaguar XJ6 4.2 ltr and 3 speed auto. Right Hand Drive. The previous owner started a restoration but I am unsure what he did. I have heard of pre-production cars and wonder if that is what this is. Anyway, I will give a description and all numbers so maybe someone here can identify it.
Sticker on door pillar:
Build Year 08/72
Vin 1L68998
Tag on inner fender:
Car No. 2S 442 BW
Body No. 5S 4307
Engine No. 8L 12482 ?S
Gear Box No. 015/20762
I have confirmed the gear box as having the same number as above. The engine has a stamp on the left bell housing CW695.
The rear of the car and main 4 door body appears to be series 1 with the small wings at the trunk lock. The dash and front end are series 2. I can see NO modifications done to the chassis. The car also has Daimler Badges. I have searched the vin and determined it to be series 1 but it just dose not add up as the front end is series 2.
Any help in Identifying this car is greatly appreciated. Regards. James

Curious about where your car was in production compared to the others I've had the past 13 years, I looked at some of those car #s...
I've also had a 72 XJ6 - 1L69426 (slightly after yours), a 73 XJ6 1L71549, a 73 XJ6 1L74281 and a few other 73 XJ12s...
Those Series 1 XJ6s were still entirely Series 1 design (with the 73 changes), but no Series 2 parts...
I'd guess that your car probably had some modifications to include the Series 2 bits, but of course that's just my speculation based on the others I've had...

Wow James....
That certainly is an interesting car....
Tough to tell if it's a Series 1 converted to a Series 2, a Series 2 converted to be a Series 1, a Jaguar converted to be a Daimler, or a Daimler converted to be a Jaguar....
It's Series 1 in the back (pre 73 rear bumper), Series 2 in the front, Series 2 dash and steering wheel, Series 1 door cards..... Daimler badging on the front, Jaguar badging on the rear....
Looks like someone was doing some customization for sure..
Have you considered a Heritage Certificate to see how it rolled off the line?

The vin sticker is original and has not been tampered with. I can see nowhere where the chassis was modified or changed. The previous owner passed away 4 years ago and the car sat in a barn. I am going to get ownership on monday and get the heritage certificate. I hope this will answer all questions.

This gets more and more bizarrely interesting since the front end is early Series II Daimler or 1973 Daimler (and the photograph of the identification plates show them as Daimler items), the steering wheel has a Daimler badge, but the trunk panel and rear bumper are Series I Jaguar items. How about this as a possibility: a rear end accident; because no Daimler trim is or was available in Canada for repair, Series I Jaguar items (note the trunk lid badge) were used for repair instead. Is that a possibility? But then, we have the Series I era VIN. My head is starting to hurt...

I Just had the registration changed and also did a vehicle search. It was first registered in Canada in September 1986. Te search also showed no accidents recorded. The registration has been active so no salvage reports have been recorded. I am now sending away for the Jaguar Heritage Certificate. I will let you know when I get that back. All numbers still show series 1. Time for another scotch. Single malt. LOL LOL

I do need two parts that were missing as I want this as original as possible. One item are the two drain tubes shown in picture. The other is the “A” pillar trim at the windshield. I did purchase 2 from a series 1 XJ6 but they are too long and wide. I will change the reflectors after I remove all the chrome for painting. I believe it was Willow green but have been wrong before.
The cams show no wear. Chains are tight, Distributor is being changed to electronic. Compression averages 120 with 85000 miles shown??? Fuel pumps have been rebuilt. I am rebuilding the AED today and the twin carbs next week. I have new original coolant hoses but find them really tight. The rad has been re-cored. New fan clutch. Waiting on Lucas starter solenoid, starter has been rebuilt. (I have lathe, milling machine).
I have 2 questions.
The owners brother tried to pull car onto trailer and could not get transmition out of park. Shifter moved but nothing changed. I know it is a no tow car without disconnection drive shaft which he did. Dose the engine need to be running to change gears??? (I have rebuild kit here just in case as I want the engine purring before I do anything else)
I have all the original schematics coming from Australia but am wondering where, if any switch is present to operate the instrument lights. Power to transmission light and radio but no power to instrument lights.
It is going to be a beer day as it is 28 below zero Fahrenheit here and Nascar is rained out.
Need this part. two required
"A" pillar required

Forget all the numbers on plates etc - they can be easily changed or forged.
If it is a series 1, there will be an engine number stamped on the body on the right hand inner guard as shown.
What is that number?
The drain tubes you have shown are from series2 and 3 cars. I am almost certain that your car is not 1972.

A most interesting car. All I can add is two things:
1. The shifter cable may have parted. Usuall at the point that the housing is clamed down under at the transmsion lever. Mine did that. Luckily in my drive during the engine swap.
2. t is not a car built for the US or Canadian marker. Other than the RHD, note the 7" outter lamps.
3. I suspect that at one time it was a grey market import.
