new car series 2
Interesting my new car is a 79 series 2, with fuel pumps in the boot and twin carbs. I would have thought that an s2 in australia would have had in tank pumps and fuel injection. Vin number is JBALY 3BC106088 the number indicates a 1979 series 2 , and the engine is a 7L with the id number above the oil pump on the rh side, indicating a series 1 engine. Can anyone shed light on the configuration of my car? Oh cloth seats as well.

All EFI cars have an in-boot pump. A 1979 Series 2 car is on the cusp of the conversion to EFI, clearly your car just escaped this. When the changeover to external fuel pumps took place, I'm not sure, but as far as I know it was because the maker of the in-tank pumps was ceasing their production. This would be whilst the Series 2 cars were being made. However, I see that the in-tank pumps are still available, so maybe there was a different reason ! It could be that with the conversion to EFI imminent, Jaguar moved over to external fuel pumps, as EFI needs a much higher fuel pressure for the injectors, so the fuel tanks had to be modified. Not wanting to have to make two versions of the fuel tanks, Jaguar just converted to in-boot fuel pumps. Interestingly, the Series 3 3.5 litre engine car continued with carburettors.

Just a gentle reminder that you are dealing with a 44 year old car and anything could have taken place in its history.
E,g. the original engine seized, blew up or just wore out and a good replacement was found from a S1 and fitted.
Possibly the original leather seats were beyond economical repair and a set of cloth covered seats were found and fitted.
I had a 1974 S2 XJ12L and it had velour (cloth covered) seats as originally fitted.
Early S2 cars definitely had external pumps in the boot. I am not sure when the internal tank pumps commenced but they were a pain to replace!
Just enjoy the car and don't worry too much about matching numbers and originality.
Cheers
