Default New member intro: Daimler Double Six Series II Vanden Plas

Hi everyone,

We picked up a Daimler Double Six Series II Vanden Plas last week. We have always been fans of big Jaguars of the William Lyons era. We both studied Mechanical Engineering together and have for quite some time played with the idea to start working on cars as a hobby. As this beautiful V12 turned up recently, we knew that know was the time to take the plunge for us. :-)

The car was first registered in 1977. It is the LHD version. From what we know, it spent some time in Switzerland, but has been in Germany for the last ~10 years. Right now it is not running due to issues with some of the injectors. The fuel changeover valve also needs replacing. And we have some additional work to do on the AC system as well as getting some rusty parts of the body work sorted out. Luckily, the previous owner already restored the interior.

Here are some pictures:

This will be a nice first project for us. We have not worked on cars before, but at least the theoretical side of things should be fine for us. It’s now time to get our hands dirty! :-) So, we are really excited to get going and get this beauty up and running again!

We are looking forward to being a part of this community. Thanks already for your help and support along the way!

Best wishes from Germany

Felix and Sebastian

Beautiful car. I’m sure you'll receive the help you might need; just ask. If you are both engineers you won’t have any trouble understanding the engineering that went into these cars, especially a series 2 as they predate the digital systems of later cars. If you haven't already, obtain a Service Manual and a copy of the S57 wiring diagram. Good luck bringing this magnificent motorcar back to life.

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone!

Great advice! We don't have the Service Manual and a copy of the S57 wiring diagram, yet.

Service Manual: I noticed that it is possible to get the Service Manual from Tony (Forum link) in digital format. Will ask for this once my newbie status expires.
Wiring diagram: I found the S57 wiring diagram for the Series III XJ6 at Jose's website (Link). Is this also applicable to our car or is there a specific version of the wiring diagram for the Series II Daimler Double Six VdP, which we have access to?

Thank you for your support on this.

Best,
Sebastian

Jaguar didn't publish the S57 guides for the Series II cars.

I'm sure some of the circuits are the same or similar so the S57 might still be of some use to you but you obviously can't rely on it entirely.

Cheers

Yes, you're right, Doug, there are some Major differences between series 3 and 3. I found the S57 to be not much help.

I have a very good Series 2 wiring diagram, came in the Factory ROM, 2.5 page foldout of the book. I went to a copy shop and had it copied and enlarged to 24x30 inches, biggest possible, so I can actually see it without resorting to my jeweler glasses to read it.

It's also worth obtaining XJS manuals as there's a lot of commonality and some aspects covered more fully.

jeweler glasses !! That is what i now need. Decades ago, i had a free standing multi function printer/copier, it had a slick magnification feature. it went kaput. i sure miss it.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the tips!

We currently only have access to the wiring diagram for the S2 in the Haynes Owners Workshop Manual. Is that any good?

The first major job we are about to undertake is cleaning and overhauling the fuel injectors.

Best,
Sebastian
