you have a Series 3 XJ-6, only one pump, in the trunk, under the carpet storage. Throw away the Haynes, those are a joke. Order the Factory Shop Manual in CD.
Series 2 XJ had two pumps, one inside each tank, but that was a problem so the Series 3 changed the system to one exterior pump.
why are you replacing the pump? those rarely go bad.

Thanks for the fast reply.... i tryed 3 new differant fuel relays and still wont start. There is no sound at all from the pump when starting.. Looks like its OME pump. My plan is to replace relay which I did , the pump and filter .....the car sat for about 3 years and wasnt driven much. your right about the haynes. the car cranks and wants to turn over and it did run when I got it but not well.......... ran ruff and no power then the no start happened,,,,it was intermitant starts and then the last time it started and ran it would not rev or stay running ......now no start.......... I repalced the plugs and will also do tune-up wires, roter, cap.......if you have any other idea that might be better it would be great..thanks

have you checked the simple stuff?
1) checked all fuses?
2) visually check fuel pump connections at the trunk?
3) do you have spark at the plug wires?
4) have you checked the Inertia Fuel Cutoff Switch? (they can tripp if you do not de-pressurize the fuel system when replacing fuel system parts, that's why you need a Factory Service Manual), press the Reset button on top of the IFCS.
5) have you placed the shifter in 1, turned your right ear to the rear seat, and tried to start the engine? (you should hear the pump whirrrring but the engine won't start in 1). If you don't hear the pump, it might not be the pump that's bad but a tripped IFCS.
6) do you smell gasoline when cranking? if yes, check the Cold Start Injector for leaks.
7) have you checked the Coil? coil wires? {substituting the coil eliminates any doubt about the coil}
8) this one is really stoopit but it happens: Do you have gasoline in the tanks?

2. connections ok
3. have spark
4. no sound at all to pump
5.ifc is not tripped
6. no gas smell
7. coil i thought ok , biut now I remember when it was running there was smoke coming off the coil .......i totally forgot about that.
8. has gas..new
thanks again... shoud i just replace the coil anyway?

OK, here goes......
The fuel pump relay switches on the fuel pump, and is itself switched in two ways, (1) when starting, (2) after engine start
1. On cranking the engine a 12v feed is switched to the pump relay to turn on the pump, but when the ignition switch is relaxed on engine start, this feed is swritched off, and the feed is provided another way, (see 2)
2. on engine starting, two tiny contacts in the MAF unit are closed by the air flap moving under the air flow, and maintain the 12v supply to the fuel pump relay.
I suggest you need to check you are getting volts to the pump. If there is only yourself, you need to solder up a bulbholder with a 12 v bulb, and 2 long wires, so you can see the bulb from the driver seat. Connect the two bulbwires to each of the fuel pump terminals, then crank the engine and you should see the bulb illuminate. If it doesn't then you have a eed or relay problem, if it does, but pump does not start, you have a duff pump.
Make sure fuel pump relay is connected up correctly too. Have you got the wiring diagram ?

relay wire color
what color wires fgo to the main relay. Right now there is black, brown, white, brown and I think white not sure on the white buts its 2 colors. But........in between the main and fuel relay there is a wire with connector not plugged into anything and it is white and green. Should this go to the main relay or not anywhere. iam pretty sure of the fuel realy wires not the one. any ideas.........and thanks for all the help so far.

The fuel pump relay has two white/green wires. One goes to the fuel pump and the other goes to the aux air valve. On models with a 3-wire oxygen sensor ('87 cars usually but some 86s were retro-fitted under a recall) a third white/green wire goes to the oxygen sensor
The "main relay" has:
White wire: key "on" voltage
Brown wire: direct/constant battery voltage
Brown/slate: voltage to injector ballast
Black: ground
Cheers
