here's two better ECU and fuel injection component diagrams that you might want to have blown up poster size at Office Depot: also do some reading at this page:

the distributor cap, where all the 7 plug and coil wires connect to the distributor.

is yours the type bolted with two screws?

are you 100% sure it is seated correctly? (even though the distributor has been mostly eliminated by now as the cause of the no-start).

Yeah, not related to lack of injector pulse.

Upstream, at the primary side of the system, a faulty module might relate to lack of injector pulse...as the ECU relies on a trigger pulse from the negative side of the coil. But, since we have spark, I think we can safely eliminate the module

Right. Ser III XJ6 ended in April 1987 as a 1987 model. The V12 versions carried on until 1992 but that's neither here nor there

A 1988 ECU will not work.

Contact David Boger at EverydayXJ. Great source for used Ser III parts.

I still think something may be either disconnected, or incorrectly re-connected.

I refuse to conclude it is the ECU, but I'm not there to use my incredible Trial-n-Error Nician skills.

I've about run out of ideas.

I'm ready to say "ECU" or "Injector Resistor pack". Both have low failure history, though, so it pains me a bit to suggest either. Not sure how to DIY bench test the resistor pack and I don't think there is any way at all to DIY test the ECU...except by substitution.

On the bright side neither should be very expensive used so, as guesses go, it won't be too painful.

Cheers

Tudstuen: I have the Injector resistor pack, ECU and diode pac for a 1984 XJ6. AFAIK they are all in good working condition.
