Newbie, and newly purchased 71 XJ6
Hi everyone:
We just purchased (for my wife), a 1971 XJ6 4.2 with 34K miles! Original paint, tires, everything. It was in storage for over twenty years, so most everything is leaking or damp. But good news, with a carb swap, it is running. The tires that were on it were new, but from 1979, so on went new Yokohama Avids. We have most of the paperwork from new, including the original owners manual and bill of sale!
After washing, I clay-bared the paint, glazed with Griots, and used Griots Best of Show, and I am very pleased.
The interior has almost zero issues, and I am in the process of detailing it.
I will be posting more about it, some project issues, and what has been, and not been done.
Thanks,
Paul

Looks like a nice car. Black and Tan...classic color combo that will always be in vogue. New tires...Great idea! Is this your first Jag? Don't they ride and handle amazing.
FULL DISCOLURE...I'm a modifier....Dont consider the following if you're an origionalist. 71 has the early rack and has a school bus like steering ratio if you're gonna replace it because of leaks a Series 3 rack using a Series 3 intermediate shaft is a bolt in upgrade.

Hello, Paul,
Not to dispute anything icsamerica says, but I changed my Series 2 rack for a Series 3 rack last winter and I wish I had repaired the S2 instead. In fact, I kept it for just that reason. I Loved the light steering and quick response of the S2 rack, one-finger steering and no fatigue; it steered like my work truck.
However, the S3 rack, by comparison steers like a lumber wagon. No more one-finger steering, and when the wheel and my hands are cold I need driving gloves to keep my hands from slipping around the wheel.
Having said that, your car is Beautiful! Congratulations!
Welcome to our playpen from ElinorB.

It might be prudent to replace coolant and brake fluid if you haven't already planned to do so. Also check the brake pads too, and make sure the handbrake mechanism isn't seized up.
It's a lovely car, you're a lucky man to find it. Those big speedo and rev counter dials always do it for me !
