hi: i just installed a rebuilt starter lucas starter. when i connected the positive battery cable the starter motor engaged without any turning of the ignition key. in fact the key isn't even in the ignition. can't figure out what i did wrong. there was only a cable that i held secure with a lock washer and a nut to one of the two posts and a red/white wire with a female connector that i plugged into one of two male prongs mounted on the starter. hmmm?????

 

Is the heavier cable (which is direct battery voltage) touching any of the other posts on the starter?

Disconnect the white/red wire. Does the problem still occur?

Do the connections on the replacement starter match the old starter?

The solenoid is betting voltage from a source otyher than the RW wire from the relay.

As suggested. make sure the large cable is on square to the solenoids and the small wire si away from it.

Well, at least the engine cranks!!!!

Good thing the ignition was not on!!!
