This is related to my 6.0 engine swap into ‘74 XJ12 but I thought I’d post a separate thread for future searches. Need some real world insight about oil line connections.
Im not using the stock oil cooler (see engine swap thread for reasons). I’m trying to connect the stock ‘95 hard oil cooler lines from engine to an aftermarket engine oil cooler.
I went to a local hydraulic hose shop and got all the needed fittings, hose, connectors etc but realized that instead of all of those connectors, AN fittings etc, that I could just connect the 3/4” hose between the stock ‘95hard lines from engine and my aftermarket cooler. But can I?
here are ‘95 lines:
and here is my aftermarket cooler with the 3/4” line “threaded” onto it.
can I use a single ear hose clamp (see below) to make that connection at the oil cooler? I know I can at the oil lines on engine with their barbs, but do the threads on oil cooler have the same “grip” as barbs? Can it hold 90 PSI? (Or whatever the highest oil pressure the engine would see?)
other thoughts?

I personally would not use the type of clamp shown in your last photo. That is a clamp I see on PEX tubing used for in-floor residential heating. House hold water pressure is usually 60psi or less and this clamp is "crimp tightened" only. The memory of the crimped band is all that keeps tension around the tubing, not good enough in my opinion. A good quality screw tightened clamp from Ideal and other manufacturers is what I use.
A hose barb is rings that are not connected, and a thread is a spiral, so you would probably leak if you clamp on to a threaded fitting. Can you get a hose barb that will thread on to the cooler fittings?
Okay, you convinced me. That idea about threads spiraling versus barbs is an excellent point.
Here (pic below) is what I got from hydraulic shop—it works but is just fussy.
the cooler is something off Amazon and while I’m sure it will work I wanted to avoid using the included lines. Plus, all those extra connectors irritated me. The problem was that the stock oils cooler hard lines on the engine take a 3/4” hose but the oil cooler has -10AN fittings with takes 5/8” hose.
I got lost in the world of AN fittings and adaptors looking for a simple solution. And then started looking for an oil cooler with -12An fittings and realized I needed to chill. Anybody who’s gone down this path will sympathize.
I just bought some AN adaptors size -10 to -12 with barb end and that should be slightly cleaner than current (pic).
Not sure if it will work, but if you have a self serve junkyard near you, take a look at Ford F250/350 truck from about 2005ish onward. The gas trucks have a nice sized cooler and it has a barb fitting. The diesel trucks have a much bigger cooler. I'm actually using the diesel cooler as my intercooler for the XJR engine.
