Default Oil cooling fan is howling--how to fix?

Car: 1986 XJ6 Series III. Problem 2: I was told while in for another problem that I have a non-functioning oil-cooling fan that needed to be replaced. Now it functions fine, but roars. Took car back and was told that this is how it is supposed to sound. Frankly, it is driving me and my wife nuts and in our underground parking it raises a heck of a racket. We have driven the car for over twenty years and apparently the fan was never functioning at all during that time so I am questioning that it needs to now. Your thoughts? Also, how would I disable it again (pull a fuse?).

The aux cooling fan does make quite a racket but it should only run if the coolant is over 94ēC. The coolant temp shouldn't routinely get that high.

The fan does have an after-cooling feature that allows it to run after the engine is turned off but that should only be for a few minutes at the most.

A few more details may help determine what's going on.

The easiest way to disable the fan is to remove the #1 fuse in the fuse box on the left fender or unplug the red relay to the laft of the radiator.

Cheers
DD
