Default Old Style Cam Covers?

First of all, does anyone know if old style cam covers will fit a newer XJ6 4.2 Series III Engine? I love the flatter, polished look of the old ones, vs. the black and aluminum "ribbed" later style. Second... if so, does anyone have any they want to unload?!?!!? I would love to put these on my 1987 Engine for installation in my Mark V project!

I have a pair complete with the original Jaguar oil cap and even the cap seal, but they are oxidized like hell, and I mean like hell. (the white oxidation you get in aluminum surfaces). My '65 S type has it too, but not as much.

these came off a 1964 3.8 S type parts car I bought which sat in the Florida jungle for 30 years before I got it. you would have to get them really polished. Fortunately, the bolt holes are not cracked as it usually happens when people overtighten the bolts with these aluminum covers. Make offer if interested.

Without being sure they'd work on the 87 XJ6, they wouldn't be worth anything to me if they don't. I'd take a chance on the fit and do the work to clean 'em up if you'll let them go cheap enough. They'll also probably have to be milled if they've been sitting that long. Would you take $30 bucks for them?

no! they are worth more even oxidized. the original oil filler cap alone is worth moocho dinero when you can find one, but check eBay Canada or eBay UK, I saw a pair (without the oil filler cap) and with cracks in the bolt holes that needed to be filled/welded, with a starting bid of $60.00 Canadian but it had a reserve. Also shipping/insurance cost in the USA will be around $25.00-$30.00, I don't know, I haven't had them weighed or quoted.
But first make sure they will fit, then go shopping.

Not sure how to determine if they will fit. Perhaps someone here has experience with this. Can anyone speak to this?

the only way to check them is to get the XJ black ribbed 4.2 valve cover and place it face-to-face with the aluminum cover. Here's a picture of how they look when nicely polished.

hehe....but with so many Jaguar enthusiasts in California, can't you check with an E-type Club? why E-type? because E-Types came with both 3.8 and 4.2 engines, so if there's any -what do you call it- "crossover" info. for valve covers, E type owners would know.

Sounds like a good idea. I will look into that. What kind of $$ are you thinking?

Don't take mine as the final word but I *think* all of the early style cam covers were cast to accept the tachometer drive at the rear. Can't remember if it's the right or left side cam cover involved but the, if I'm right, there will be a semi-circular hole at the rear which is essentially the mirror image of the semi-circular hole where the "half moon" seals fit on the cylinder head. You'll need to have something made to plug the hole where the drive would be mounted.

Cheers

that is correct, the intake side cam cover (passenger side), has a half-circle opening at the rear (firewall side), for the tach drive, and there is a rubber seal strip between the cam cover and the tach drive housing. A new piece of aluminum can be machined and inserted in the notched semi-circle with RTV sealer.

Cybersib,
I'm trying to find out what they are worth. these original valve covers are not exactly easy to find in any condition, let alone undamaged, and not to mention the original Jaguar oil filler cap and seal. As soon as I find out, I'll let you know.

So, I got these today with filler cap for $75.00. Not bad, eh?

I think the thing Jose is that they are worth what someone will pay for them. Some people might pay up to $500.00 for these. The fact of the matter is though, search and look and the can be found for far less, but not right away. Gotta wait for the right deal! So, hope you don't mind that I asked. That is the way I roll, always looking for the "deal". Anyway, best of luck selling yours!

Jose, Do you still have those cam covers? Will they fit my '75 4.2 L. If so what do you want for them. I live in Florida so it may be worth my while to drive out to you with one of my covers and if they match we can do a deal then and there>

denraden1: hello neighbor! I still have them but I don't want to sell them for $30.00 or $75.00. mine are from a 1963 batch and are not cracked at the bolt holes.

yes they will match any Jaguar engine valve cover but you will have to find a plug for the tachometer sender half-moon opening at the rear of the intake-side cover. Also mine are not polished.

I am not a 'chulo' in the habit of dibbling with prices when I need something. You tell me what you want for them. Send me a pic or call me. tres,cuatro,siete- seis,ocho,zero- seis, cinco, uno, cuatro.
