Default Original spare tire won't fit in boot '86 XJ-6

I had a tire go flat last week and had to use my original spare (Pirelli 215/70/15 to get to work. The spare has never been used. I drove maybe 50 miles before getting the flat fixed and and back on the car. Now the spare will not fit back in the boot? It came out with minimal effort and shows no visible defects. I reduced the tire pressure to 20 PSI and it still won't clear fore and aft. Has anyone ever experienced this, or have an explanation? I have had this same tire in and out many times with no issues. It's spooky strange. Thanks.

Dumb question, but did anything slip down in the front/rear of the wheel well?

tires expand somewhat when they roll.

I think the wel was designed to accomodate the 205 70 15. many cars now are fitted with the 215 70 x 15, they do fit in the well as to circumference, but stand proud about an inch!

Thanks for the feedback. I checked for obstructions but everything was clear. I reduced tire pressure to 10 PSI and it finally went in. I keep a portable compressor so it will be an easy matter of filling her up next time. Since it was the first flat in 37 years, I hope "next time" is also a long way off.

There is something wrong there ! the 215 width was for the V12, but owners have fitted them to sixes. There was no difference in the wheel well between V12s and the sixes. The only thing I can think of is that part of the wheel well is formed by the fuel pump and piping cover. Is this mounted correctly ?

From what I can find, the 215s were used in the XJ-6, at least by 1986. They are the only size listed in my factory Maintenance Handbook "Tyres; Pirelli Cinturato 215/70/VR 15". There is no interference from the fuel pump, filter, or plumbing. I have had that same tire in and out several times to replace the fuel pump and to change filters. The only difference this time is I drove on the spare for four days about ten miles each day until I could get the road tire repaired. I can only think that driving on it somehow increase the diameter. I know it sounds crazy.
