So far I've done all the vacuum hoses, replaced the plugs, leads and fitted the pertronix dizzy and coil. Also changed the thermostat to get the engine temps back up around 90 as it had previously been running cold.
So far I am delighted with how the car is running. I recently did a 300 mile weekend with the car and it was great. Returned 17mpg US
Last weekend we took it to Laguna Seca camping to watch the MotoGP. It got a lot of attention in the camp ground for sure.

Next on the list is to take the fuel injectors out and send them for cleaning, and replace the fuel injection hoses at the same time.

I picked up my '87 Series III from the mechanic this morning. Had the new dizzy and coil put in along with plugs and wires with an oil change. BIG difference in smooth performance and crisp acceleration. Not sure if it was the dizzy/coil combo or all but all I can say is WOW after only some 30 miles.

I seem to notice it more when you just start to accelerate. There was a momentary hesitation before, but now it's pretty responsive

I've now put about 100 miles on this new setup. I'm still amazed at the truly noticeable difference in the smoothness of the engine. I'm certain this is what these engines were always ment to feel like in performance of both a luxury sedan and the power of the E-type which they were also in. I wish I'd done this the first day. Thank you to all the guys on the original posting that prompted me to put in this Petronix dizzy. You definitely lead me on to something good.

Why have a useless device detiorating in the engine bay? Just plug the holes with bolts and washers. Neatness counts.
I have no criticism of Pertronix products other than they were too late for me. I labored with point and condenser ignition for decades. I would have welcomed one for most of my older cars. Always did have trouble with setting point gap with a feeler guage. My first Dwell meter was very welcome!!
But, replacing a worn distributor with almost any healthy unit will get big results!!!

Having read through this thread I contacted Pertronix for the parts, they tell me that the Pertronix will not work in my 86 XJ6 Series 3 - because it is fuel injected. So im now confused, but I think Ill go ahead and order the dizzy and instal it anyway
Comments most welcome!

Sorry to resurrect an "old" thread everyone. I found it in the search and have a few questions if you don't mind.
1. How can a better spark improve fuel economy? I'm not questioning the claim; I have read it in several places. Does the ECU somehow know to tell the injectors to squirt less? Or is it a function of better fuel ignition meaning a more responsive car, therefore you don't have to push it as much as you did on the Lucas distributor? I'm just guessing, really.
2. Is there such a thing as "high performance" spark plug leads for the XJ6, ie. cut to the proper lengths?
3. Does the better spark lead to the possibility of using higher octane gas? Or is that all about compression ratio. I only took one auto shop class in grade nine.
4. could the Petronix contribute to solving the persistent high idle situation that many of these cars have, ie. can we set at 750rpm as it says on the sticker under the hood/bonnet or am I stuck with 1000?
Thanks everyone.
