do you mean a wire mesh behind the grille? Like a screen? I am trying to remember where I got two panels of diamond style mesh but I do remember I pulled them from something because I had the same idea but never did it. They are or were stainless steel. Maybe they came off residential air handler filters? Can't remember, it was a long time ago. Maybe I still have them, not sure. The question is where!

Down here it is known as "woven wire mesh", usually stainless, and available cut from a master rol by the metre, in different wire sizes and hole specs.
I used that on the XJS a very long time ago. Took a weekend to cut it and get it just what I wanted.
I then used the same spec as a "behind the prison bar" grilles of the X300, but I cannot find the snaps, cyber space has struck again.

define dfiamond mesh: Diamond Mesh Also called rhombic wire mesh because of the shape of its gauges, diamond mesh is constructed out of linear wires that are linked together and form a series of diamond-shaped holes.
available in eBay, Lowe's, ACE Hardware, McMaster Carr, and of course, Jaguar.
