Look into the pioneer mvh lineup, you can get them with no CD player, so the are only about 4 inches deep, plenty of room behind for wiring!! Mine is an older one, but still does, blue tooth, aux line in and a usb line in, hands free calling, etc, and if I’m. It mistaken you can buy the Sirius receiver to add to it! Sounds decent through the door speakers, and has preamp outs if you wanted to upgrade

When I got my 85 XJ6 it came with original door speakers and an PO fitted afertmarket radio/CD unit. The sound may have been good for 1985, but was terrible in 2020.
I replaced the speakers with modern 4" Polk units. Better sound quality, but not good enough. I purchased this unit, the Kenwood-KSC-SW11-Compact-Enclosed-Subwoofer. It was easy to mount on standoffs under the front passenger seat and the control (wired) is on the inside of the dash glove box lid when it is opened.
It splices easily into the speaker wires as they leave the head unit and the whole installation is invisible. Once you set the various bass/bypass levels that suit your style, the unit will switch on with the head power and volume is controlled by the radio/head control.
The improvement in sound quality is just AMAZING! Thoroughly recommended.
Best mod I've made to the car as decent sound just enhances the experience of driving this machine, especially on long highway trips.

Ooh I have to say one more thing...after installing my new speakers and head unit, the sound would cut out if I turned the volume up over half way. Very annoying because it just wasn't loud enough. This head unit does draw way more power then the original one...eventually I thought to run a 18 Gauge power wire straight from the battery (through a fuse) to the head unit, instead of using the power wire in the car's harness. This fixed the problem. If you are installing yours, I'd suggest adding a heavier ground wire too while your'e in there.
