re-attaching trim piece

What car and year? In the Series 3 XJ the chromed bar from side to side, the license plate frame, and the emblems have pins onto which a plastic bushing or ferrule slides over, then from behind, a locking barrel is slid over the bushing, a pita to install. Go to an ACE Hardware and find automotive nuts that cut their own thread as you turn them clockwise. Ford and GM use those nuts to attach emblems to grilles. Bring the part with you so you get the correct size nut for the pin. The picture below shows the nut on the right, ignore the fastener on the left of the picture.

Jose,
thanks for the feedback, the car is a 1974 XJ12. Because of the inside panel on the trunk lid and lack of cut outs in this panel, I cannot see or get close to all of the tabs on the chrome piece. I may be able to put a nut on the center tab but that would be the only one. It looks like the other chrome pieces on the rear of the trunk lid only have plastic inserts in the trim tab holes to hold pieces in place. Would like to try and locate some of these?

If anyone can get new ones it might be SNG Barrat USA Store. Check their online catalog.
