Replacing water pump shaft seal

Hi all,
My water pump developed a leak after sitting for too long. i assume the shaft got a little rusty from the lack of coolant and has now ripped the seal apart. I can buy a new seal for $18 but im a bit worried about pressing the impeller off. Do i only need to press the shaft through the impeller or do i need to press the fan boss off the front then remove the shaft and press the impeller off?
How do you go pressing it all back on? I have a press but im thinking I might need to put a few tacks on to hold it all together once im finished.
I dont have the money for a new pump at the moment, which I will eventually buy, so i just want to get the thing going so i can drive it around without worrying about cooking it.
Thanks,
Jay
