YEP. Cotton Reel is uninstalled.

Have a read. It is V12 to start with, the 1./2 size engine is further down.

Still clear as mud, ask, I/we can walk you through it.

And my question is, What might have caused the two rubber mounts to sag? This geometry surely will cause the prop shaft to go out of phase, right?
will the missing cotton reel cause the sagging?

Rubber sag is usually, but not always, caused by Great Age, heat and accumulation of escaped engine oil and road grime.

Dear Grant Francis:

By "cotton reel", are you referring to #3 in the diagram?

Its like Lego for Adults.

Over complicated, 99% assembled WRONG by someone, and usually parts missing.

I am trying to find a parts drawing of the assembly, but not enough coffee yet,.

As Elinor said, OLD AGE, just like us humans.

Out of phase, NO, out of alignment, YES.

NO, the mis-fitted cotton reel will NOT cause the sagging. Other issues, vibration, banging, rattling etc etc, YES.

Dear Grant Francis:

"vibration, banging, rattling" --- I have precisely all those!!
Do you have a diagram of the BW66 version assembly? I do not have the factory service manual. And per chance that I had a glance of it, it did not seem to be very clear. Also the assembling instructions were rather vague. It'll be great if the diagram comes with part numbers attached.

Jaguar has parts diagrams available on their Classic parts website. Here is the XJ6, the 4.2 transmission mount is on page 46: https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic.../gearbox/#p=46
The 3.4 mount is different, and on the previous page. Numbers in brackets after the part number on the drawing indicate quantity.

OK, 6 beers down, and I have included the 6cyl (1/2 size engine) in the Transmission Doco.

Had it done at 2 beers, but Cyber Space stole the damn thing, so I wrote it again.

Dear Grant Francis:

Can you verify the error in the TH400 drawing being #27 and #28 should be reversed? Also, Some mentioned that the spring itself is directional, that it can only be one side up. Can you verify this?

YEP, #27 and #28 are in the wrong position.

The V12 mount has ONE "sleeve" as a machined section of the "pin", so then the washer, followed by the spacer.

The 6 cylinder "pin" is basically a BOLT, and so you have e spacer/washer/spacer.

SIMPLE

The spring is NOT ended. It will fit either way, BUT, the V12 has only ONE rubber seat on the bottom, the 6 cyl has a rubber seat on each end of the spring, AND, the V12 and 6 cyl springs are NOT the same.
