Screen washer pump xj6 1977
Hello All!
well this one is crazy. Brand new screen washer motor/pump. Connected up to the car it just gets hot. I have checked the wires to it with both a voltmeter and a light bulb. 12.5 volts and the bulb lights up and off when triggered with the wash switch on the end of the light stalk in the car. All is good. Taking wash pump off the car and sitting it on a bench with two wires direct from a battery motor buzzes into life and pumps a liter of water in a matter of seconds from a bottle and fills a container through some plastic tubing. With the wiring on the car checking out fine why does the wash pump not work when connected in?
I have LGB ( light green black wire) as positive and plain green wire as earth, as according to the wire diagram for the car. Very puzzled. Need to have this fixed for the annual test.
Replies much appreciated.

Thanks Jose, reversing the wires worked. Maybe there was a drop of Gin left in the bottle that helped too? Those are the actual wires from the loom on the car. The pump now works in reverse ie it draws from the side it should push toward but no matter. The washer pump is clearly labeled + - which I adhered to so I am still puzzled but very glad to now get on with passing the annual test. Best, Neale

When you install the pump on the car is the line primed? I had to have my system operable in order to pass a vehicle inspection and the mechanic ended up installing a check valve to keep fluid in the line. It is very long draw from the front of the engine bay to the pump location. Your wiring sounds correct from memory.
