Thanks to this forum I learned how to change a worn lower hinge on the front left door. I have a 72 XJ6 series 1. But very strange. The door hinges appear to be that of a series 2 car. Anyways, the front left door's lower hinge is so worn that when that door is opened it sinks 1 inch below. This hinge needs to be changed.

So I was lucky enough to find a series 1 left front lower hinge on Ebay and bought it. It came from England and I live near San Francisco, CAlifornia.

My doors have the series 2 hinges. When the series 1 hinge came, it looked different than the hinges that are on my car. Anyways, I managed to pull off the old hinge from my car and installed the new hinge.

Wow! This was a huge job. My God I tried to pull out the inner fender from behind the tire but I can't. I think what happened is this car is 40 year old and the metal pieces all fused together by rust. So I had to drill holes then use electric saw to saw open the inner fender. Then I put my hand in to unscrew open the 2 bolts thats holding the outer fender. Pull open the outer fender then was able to loosen the long bolts which are holding the lower hinge. It was a huge long job. Took me 6 hours.

But just want to tell you guys that the series 1 and 2 hinges are interchangeable.

I am sorry I made a typo. My car is 1972 series 1. But for some reason it has the series 2 hinges on my doors.

Possible tip on door removal. My son was helping me work out of a small catastrophe on the driver door of my SIII.

A racheting box wrench reached two of the bolts holding the tin in the door post. A whole lot better than a flat at a time.

I got a "good' set of Craftsmans. But, HF and Ace had them for a good deal less. Same quality, I doubt it. But useful. I gave my son two sets one SAE and one Metric.

Oh, need to remove and replace door avoided. Son is a master of moving metal.
The hyper extended door was impossible to close. Now closes nicely. Application of leverage in clever ways with interesting tools. A bit of scarring on the door edge, but better, lots, than before.

Default Series 1 had two styles of front door hinges

I replaced my early '71 front door hinges with the later style that look like a SII hinge (has the big spring). Early ones just have a "catch"..

Loosening up the front fender to almost falling off, helps create the needed room to get the long bolts out of the hinge.

It seems that Jaguar did not place ANY thoughts on the maintenance ease of working on these cars years down the road. Just purchase a new one every
two-three years and avoid all this wear and tear.... shorter bolts would have made this hinge replacement much easier...
