I have spend quite some time thinking about this. The reason I did use it was because 1: I simply had it, and it was good and leak free. 2: the camper will be around 2600-2800 kilo when fully packed. That is about 1000 kg more than the jaguar the engine came from. So it will have to pull more.

Better safe than sorry, is what I am thinking.

As a point of reference, I have a Daimler DS420 limo with the 4.2 and it weighs about 2800kg. I've driven it hard over the grades in the Canadian Rockies, and the oil was fine. Mind you, the exhaust did get hot. I had fitted an exhaust temperature gauge and on the long grades where I put my foot to the floor and hold it there for 25 km the exhaust temp went to 1100°C. However, that's a high as the gauges goes.... Normal highway cruise temperatures are about 550-600 °C.

NIce, I really like the 420! it's a heavy beast though! I thought they were usually around 2100-2200 kg? Special edition?

Anyways, Maybe you are right, and I am overdoing it. However, I don't see any drawbacks of using the additional oil cooler, so as I have already fitted it, I will probably just leave it.

It's interesting Jaguar did fit the external oil cooler, and as far as I can tell they only got rid of it in the MY 93 onwards, when the radiator size increased.

Most of the DS420's were fairly bare bones cars and mine is fully optioned. When I put it on a scale it was slightly over 2800kg. Interestingly, 1000kg less than my fathers Ford F250.

It certainly does no harm to have the cooler, but if you need to make space for something else you could get rid of it with no ill effect.

still going well here. Lot of work done, but not interesting to share. Connecting hoses, lines. making brackets etc.

but now all in in place. only wiring needs to be integrated. it does crank, doesn't start as there is no fuel in the tank yet. Hopefully I will have time to get some fuel tonight, and fire it up!

just a quick update on my series1 with the aj6 engine.

it's such a joy to drive, and it amazes mee how trouble-free I have been able to run this as daily driver for past year and a few months now. It really exceeds anything I was expecting. The only issue is, that I tow a lot and it doesn't really look good with a trailer behind it...

It's alive and drove under it's own (jaguar) power!!!!

all seems well, only the idle is high. 1200 at idle (roughly) and it drops when I put it in gear, but not as far as it should, when in gear. anyway, pictures first:

So, the high Idle remains an issue but I already ruled out a couple of things. no vacuum leaks, tps idel signal was 0.69 so I reset this to 0.55. replaced thermostat and coolant sensor. So now I will adjust the IACV, and should be good. other than that it runs great!

yesterday I took it for a spin again, and for the first time went faster than 30 kph. Up to 90 I think. It was warm, so also a good day to test cooling, but all seems fine. There were 2 issues.

1. the rear axle is not the right one. It's a 4.88 which makes it rev too much. It's quick of the line, but top speed is poor, or at high revs. I will add a tach, to get some numbers.

2. The oil pressure light came on... And you may guess why:

Series I with AJ6 engine-tcnbi9g.jpg

yep, the line blew from the oil cooler connection. Why? I simply forgot to tighten the hose clamp.... As soon as I saw it, I was like 'o yeah, that was one of the things I stille needed to check and tighten....'

so the trip home looked like this:

Yes, I towed it.... I know I shouldn't with an automatic, but is was only 1 mile from home.

So, the series 1 with 4.0 liter aj6 engine has been our daily driver for nearly 2 years now. Time to look back.

First thing: we have 3 kids, and it's not really a big car. getting all the seat belts on is not the easiest job, but it works.

In the past 2 years, it never gave any reason to question it's reliability. I have made some minor paint work repairs, as there were som scratches. other than that, just maintenance.

and So much fun to drive! the 4 liter straight six is absolutely brilliant! so smooth, so much torque. You have to drive it hard every once in a while. It's just begging for it!

so, busy christmas holidays with lots of family/friends visits.

and that means adding up the kilometers/miles. We did some 500 km last week I think, (310 miles or so). Such a joy to cruise in the jag with the familiy.

and of course some pictures:
