Hi Clarke & Grant.
I know I'm coming at this late, but the instant I read your comment of a "strong yellow spark", I also smelled trouble. As Grant says, this should be have a definite blue quality and have a real "crack" to it. Were this an original XK ignition, I would go straight for the dizzy's condenser (capacitor) but on the Series3 system, it's logical to suspect the coil, as Grant suggests.

After confirming with Grant that is what he uses I ordered one. Been in since yesterday, all going to plan at the moment.

Now her is a GOOD reason for an all nighter, mmmmm.
The S3 I fitted one to about 6 years ago, dropped in today, oops, NAH, just dropped in to ask why the car keeps going and going and going. Apparently, before the coil change he had 30kms, then stop for 30 minutes, the 30k more.
He is quite sure something else is going to ruin his day. I explained that since he is 83yo, there is more chance of him having an issue than the car, at which he promptly informed me his Pacemaker has a new battery, so he is good to go for a while yet.
Sense of humour, LUV it.

He drives it like he stole it, just what it was made for.

So Dr Phill & I have considered the coil a few times, but having replaced the dizzy cap & leads we tried all the things the issue was pointing to before outlaying cash on more parts. After a complete strip down of the carby's I borrowed a coil off the neighbour, all ran well for a few days so I rang Grant Frances as the local "Fuelmiser" distributor could not confirm the coil he recommended would be right for the system.
