Speed Control (Cruise) rebuild

Speed Control (Cruise) rebuild
Has anyone ever delved into the speed control (cruise control) system in a series 3 XJ6? My bellows was deteriorated to the point of not holding a vacuum, or anything for that matter. Plus, the entire unit was awfully dirty and simply required a good thorough cleaning.
I'm wondering if the plastic caps for the vacuum intake filters are available.
And, what, if anyone knows, is the red and yellow material that was used to seal the solenoid units inside the casting?
Any help would be appreciated.

I cant help with the actual questions you answered. But I did want you to know it is not impossible to accomplish. I replaced the bellows on mine, cleaned the hell out of it, and all appears to be well. Or - it holds vacuum at least. Not on the road yet. It did not hold vacuum before - bellows were dry rotted. Try Dave Boger for the filters. www.everydayxj.com

OK, I bought a unit from David Boger at everydayXJ. Thank you David. Upon receiving the unit I simply cleaned up the casing with a wire wheel (it is a used part after all). I had already bought a new rubber bellows for my original unit, so I used the new one. I purchased some rubber mounts off eBay that were meant for a Harley Davidson oil tank. I got 5 rubber isolator mounts for something like $8.00, as opposed to buying the direct replacement rubbers at $18.00 each (that was the lowest price I found.) The HD rubbers are a little shorter but they lined up with the mounting holes and went right in!! I reconnected the cable, the electrical connection and the vacuum supply hose.
Is there anything else that I can check before expecting the cruise control to work? Tests to be performed, continuity checks, voltage readings? It'd be really nice not to have to press on the accelerator all the time!!

Make sure the 3 amp fuse is OK as well as the vacuum hoses.
Do you have a cable drive speedo or electric? 1982-ish was a transition period. If you have cable drive then the speed pick-up for the cruise control will be at the rear of the driveshaft....just before the differential. Make sure it's at least somewhat clean and the wires are OK
cheers

John's Cars in Fort Worth, Texas has the mounts. I forgot how much, I got some from him. a long time ago and I've not mounted the CC.
An after market CC that I bought for my IHC had a metal "bellows" that pulled on the throttle via chain. worked Quite well.
I don't mind using my foot at all. Twasn't til the 80's that I drove a car with CC. The IHC was it.
Although, at times on I5, I did use the one in my 88 Tbird or the 85 Ford F150 4x4.
Oh, yeah, my 69 Toyota FJ40 had a had throttle on the dash. Same, on I5 at times.
Pure manual, no fancy stuff.
