the speedometer on my car was working, but the needle was bouncing and the counters for kilometres driven hasn't counted since 2009. I took the thing apart and studied it. The cable from the automatic transmits through gears to a lever that rotates as if it should pull the counters to increase the reading on the counter. It's close, but it doesn't touch the gear.

If anyone knows whats missing or what is wrong here I'd appreciate it very much. Soon I will have a series 3 xj6 donor, if I need anything I can cannibalize that.
So, that lever DOES appear to be broken. My explanation and choice of words may have been a bit weird.
The speedometer cable drives a set of gears which drive the lever. The lever is off-centre by a little so when the gear rotates the lever momentarily touches another gear and pushes it up slightly. This will read on the kilometre-counter as 1 kilometre.
If anybody has an idea how this rotation is transmitted to the axle with the numbers I would like a picture or exploded diagram. It's hard to explain this all but I do understand most of it now.
