Spring to do
Hi all, Reading the forum got me thinking of the things to do to my series iii. I hope you can help. First, I’ve been getting a clunking noise when the car drops down to first when stopping. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Like to know what I’m looking for before I get it on a lift, or take it to a shop. Also, I’m in need of new upholstery for front seats. Or good used ones. Live in northern NY. Car is stored at present time. Thanks in advance.

If my car was clunking as you describe, I would suspect a U-joint as that's easiest to fix.
When you get it on the lift, try to rotate the drive shaft back and forth by hand. You might hear a little play in the diff gears but there should be nothing else.
Check not only for noise (sometimes you can't hear a loose joint) and also for feel. You should not feel any movement when doing this except maybe in the diff gears as mentioned and that should't be very darn much!
Any play in the joint will be amplified when under power because much more force is applied than a normal person can exert by hand.
