Default St.John Concour d'Elegance

I should include of course what the paint condition was prior to this masochistic task. The boot was just as bad. The roof was pretty overall but the center about 12-15" across and along entire center line had similar marks.
As noted a while ago I purchased a 1978 XJ6L with 11,500 original miles last fall. Overall in remarkable condition. The paint however I didn't mention was misrepresented in the advertisement images. Lighting studio and Photoshop was surely used.

Now mind you I almost walked away from this car when I first came upon it. However after the test drive, the interior condition and utilizing a paint depth gauge I took the leap. The latter I used expressly due to the PO's story regarding the warranty respray when he bought the car. (1979)

I know how to paint and cut and wheel a car so I took the chance. On top of it this chance had to be applied to my invite to the St.John Concour d'Elegance yesterday (Sunday, uly 28th) So the past month (after the ignition sorting out saga) I spent cutting and polishing the paint. I only worked primarily above the pinstripe. The lowers were remarkably fine with slight orange peel. I'll go over that later and the paint cut so well these areas only need compound no wet sanding.

That said I was pleased with how it came out. Area's remain to go over and "massage" but that's fine. The "mistake" I made was posting the process online and I was wrong that no one would be interested! So I added more pressure as I had quite a number of people coming to see the car on the field and asking when they can see it. The calls I received when I was not around the car did feel good after all the hard work.
Frigg'n car kicked my ***...lol I lost 5 pounds just this past week...

Decided to go over the entire roof. 1500

Full 1500

600

600 grit next to OE surface

600 grit

Time for the front end. The surface is cutting too well. So I did some more digging including going over the original owners records and his story. Leyland (JRT at the time ) had some serious quality control issues. With the Jaguar line the paint was a particular sore point. The owner told me that JRT repainted the car since he wasn’t happy. Looking though the historical record he was one of many Leyland took care of. Since the Jaguar is a 1978-9 model Lacquer would have been the paint of choice

Next cut with 1000 (left) 600 (right)

Full 600

Wet sanding (600) the second half

Wet sanded (600) next to the OE paint. This is what happens with car washes over the years and a poor dust cover. Thankfully the paint cuts very well!

Full bonnet at correction stage.

Starting on the bonnet. Right side correction stage. Left side still wet sanded at 1500. Major PIA with so many convex / concave surfaces intersected with positive / negative fillets and valleys along with tension peaks just inching to to make their presence known.. This is indeed challenging

Chris Young July 19 · The roof is 90% there. I’ll have to go back with a bit more wet sanding in the center. At this stage it’s correction finish. Still polish and final and wax. On to the bonnet tomorrow/ Sunday. Enough for now. Time to go to rcblodi’s for some garage antics. (Great time by the way)

After a fun morning now prepping all afternoon for tomorrow... shade, music and wine...

Outside for the cleansing wash. The imperfections seen side under fluorescent lighting is no where near as visible outside. The “rule” is of one can get the surfaces to look acceptable under fluorescent lighting under natural light it”ll be great!

On the field. The category was "Modern Collectibles" Of course as soon as I'm placed a Vector and BMW Z8 pull in next to me. She held up well though. Lots of images taken during the day.

Description board and plaque

Driving onto the field...

Yes, let me add my congratulations on a spectacular job. I think I was on vacation the end of July and it must have slid off the bottom of the page before I got back. Once they slide off the bottom of the page they pretty much go dormant.
