Steering rack compatibility between models & generations?

NO idea on LHD, but my experience with the "proper way" is HAHA:
Basically 2 racks.
One (early) has a "long pinion (or snout as we call it), so a different length shaft from the steering wheel, and the pipes a tad angled differently.
The other (later) is a short pinion (snout), and has a longer shaft from teh steering wheel.
Mounting is the same right thru.
S3 is reported to have a different ratio, but I dunno.
I have never played with a S1, so again, dunno.
6 and 12 were the same, apart from what I said above, and XJ-S is included in that also.
I have used long and short in different cars over the years, just changed the intermediate shaft to suit the rack being used at the time, and no ill effects.
AGAIN, this is RHD, coz of where I hang out.

Grant basically covered it. Most racks are short tower. The long tower were used in Series 1 & 2 cars with 6cyl. The Series 3 XJ, all V12's XJ and XJ-S always got short tower rack. The Series 3 does have a slightly quicker ratio. The hot setup is the ZF rack found in the 1992 and later XJ-S and Aston Martin DB7. This rack offers better feel, smoother operation and better seals and improved mounting. It's also aluminium and much lighter than the earlier racks. I did the upgrade and the difference is slight but noticeable. The ZF rack is a bolt in upgrade. The fluid lines are in a slightly different location but the same hoses and fitting can still be used.
