Hello,
I just purchased my first Jag 1972 XJ6
My rack just leaked out all the power steering fluid so I'm looking to replace it. I've read the threads about the series 1, 2, & 3 racks being interchangeable and have landed on wanting a series 3 rack (I believe 1979 to 1992). I was going to google 1988 Jaguar xj6 steering rack. The previous owner has modified the car with a Chevy v8 and the person I purchased the car from did not do the modifications. I know that a longer lower steering shaft is needed to do the conversion, but I wanted to make sure I need that part before I go out and buy it. Is there a site that can identify the current rack that's in my car by the part number, or does a member here know what I would see for a measurement of the tall rack vs the short rack? The answer may be in the picture because I have heard the short racks have the line fittings at the front, but want to make sure. Also, If anyone has suggestions on where to purchase the rack and longer shaft I'm all ears
Here's a pic of my Racks part number: Pow-A-Rak HBE 7951
Hi Enomadra,
FWIW you could try Kiley-Clinton Engineering, here in the UK. They specialise in Jaguar steering mechanisms and I’m sure will be able to answer any questions you have. They can usually supply reconditioned racks from stock, although you may have to forfeit a deposit if you’re not exchanging a rack.
They’re respected in the Jaguar community here and don’t seem to need to advertise, probably because of it.
Hope that helps.
Jules
Our sponsor Jaguar Specialties (Andrew) offered to have the professional rebuilders do mine. I was asking about bushings and seals to do mine myself. And was doubting my skills. I am not to that point yet, but will eventually take him up on the offer. You have to ask for current prices and what he can do.
