Default Steering U-joint rattle

I've developed an annoying rattle in my steering column. It's slight and only occurs under specific conditions.....but those conditions are present every day on my morning drive to work.

I've traced the problem to a mere trace of wear and free play in the u-joint at the end of the steering column, Item #1 in this illustration:

https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic.../brand/jaguar/

Note that this is the u-joint that is inside the cabin, not the one that attaches to the steering rack

The part, which was sold as a 'lower column' by Jaguar, is NLA

Has anyone ever repaired this lower joint? I'm sure it was never intended to be a repairable item, but I know there are some clever people out there !

Buying used is an option, of course, although any I buy will be as old as mine and quite possibly no better

Another option is to take a different route to work that doesn't include the same road surface irregularities

Thanks for any ideas

Cheers
DD

Doug,

Memory, or nightmares, I do remember sorting one on one of the Series cars, and it involved 2 hammers, and ever so slightly "tightening" the cross and cup relationship. I did it insitu, but I was younger, sillier, more flexible back then.

A bearing company down here, back in the '70's (long gone now) did supply those small joints for that application on damn near any car/truck/tractor, but nothing cam close to the Jag one, hence the 2 hammers.

Maybe something here Doug?

or

Also, if you are up to VIN 165790, JCP say they have them (part number 4) CAC3470 this link is for the XJS, but the part is the same for the Series III:

I did a search using the term "small u joints for steering shafts" and there are hundreds of suppliers and images.

I used Bing. for the search.

try it.

Thanks all.

Greg, the CAC3470 is the joint that attached to the rack and pinion. I need #1 in your illustration.

Jose, thanks, I'll try digging deeper, but so far I haven't come across anything resembling the Jaguar part:

Cheers and thanks

Thanks, Jose, I've seen those. But I'm still holding out hope for a new Jaguar part, or repair of same. Grafting a generic replacement onto the column isn't what had in mind at the moment although, in the end, it might be the only choice

Cheers

then the best bet will be ebay UK for a new old stock part. Also, is this u joint strictly an XJ part ?

older models might have used the same part under a different number.

Saloons like the 420G, basically an inflated XJ. And the Series 1 and 2 XJ.

I know the same part (and part number) was used on many years of XJS. Not sure about others, will research

Cheers and thanks

Try this. https://ebay.us/4OtmAJ
By the time Jag made the 1995 XJS the parts were of far better quality, many parts cross over and this one may too,

Sorry for the misinterpretation of your post. These things are all over UK ebay, and I think your failure mode is not typical, so a second hand one would be OK.

Well, others have far more practical ideas than I.

My thought was mechanical or machining in scope. Might not even work. Take it apart. Bore and sleeve the loose "holes".

But, Grant's percussion method is kinda like me!!! Smash out the slop.

A thought just hit me!!!! Glop on some grease. Quiten it down...

Is the "double jointed" arrangement as shown in the pic in your post number 5 essential to the steering working properly, given the angles involved etc? Is there any reason why a normal steering UJ would not work in its place, assuming a splined shaft? eg one such as:

Default OK, I'm a moron !

Gentlemen, I'm afraid I've wasted everyone's time. My apologies.

I've had the cabin side u-joint and the rack side u-joints mixed up in my brain!

What I need is CAC3470, which is item #2 in the illustration in my original posting. This part is readily available.

Thanks for all the help

Cheers

Do you still have a used one available? My 1986 xjs has a very worn out bottom u-joint on the steering shaft and the rattle is irritating
