Stuck in drive
Hey guys I will be helping a friend get his 84 xj6 back on the road. The car hasn't been driven in about ten years, but has been started from time to time. The main problem as I understand is that the car it stuck in gear so when you start it it wants to drive, so you have to hold down the brakes. I am looking for some info or things to look for to fix this problem first.

OK.
A number of things spring to mind, but taking what you say about sitting, and starting from time to time.
When you move the gearlever there is a corresponding lever movement at the transmission casing, LH side, reach up, and feel around, you will feel the cable attachment , and if your mate CAREFULLY (engine OFF), moves the inside lever you will feel this arm move. I say carefully coz your hand is up in there, and you dont want injury??.
That small arm on the transmission is in the "full rear" position for actual transmission PARK, so if the cable is siezed, out of adjustment, whatever, the transmission may be in Reverse, but inside the car the gear lever is in "P".
Further to this, if inside the car you are in "P" and the car is trying to go forward, you got other issues.
This will require some systematic diagnosis, but not hard by any means, the sitting around is going to be the main issue I reckon.
