Thought as much.

Excuse me?

Consequential damage from a road hazard.

The road debris locking up the brake caliper was the "proximate cause" of everything
that followed.

People on JF have had oil coolers replaced by insurance by running into
concrete curbs in parking spots.

I would push the point harder ... much harder, in writing by registered post.

Claims adjusters work for their employers and make things up as they go
along. It is very helpful to read your policy carefully as that is the
governing document despite what any adjuster might say verbally.

There is also the relevant legislation and regulations that may be
of assistance.

Damn mate.....
Hard to believe something as simple as a twig could cause such damage..

Any and all Aussies have travelled these kinds of roads on many occasions, I can not say I have ever before heard of an incident like this....

I tend to agree with Plums.... this kind of thing is exactly what insurance coverage is for....
This was not caused through neglect, or poor maintenance... but by conditions of the roads..... roads that council should maintain to prevent danger to motorists.

Will a series 2 or 3 unit fit ?

It looks a lot better after a good hosing down and cleaning away of soot and powder.
Clarke,

Yes, S2 and 3 and XJ-s cradle assemblies will fit the car.

As said, ratios became a merry go round right thru the ranges.

Most? S1 6cyl were 3.31, as were early S2 V12's.

S2 6cyl were mainly 3.07.

HE V12 were 2.88.

The 2.88 would be a no no in my opinion.

At about somewhere in 1976 Jag changed to partial metric metal brake pipes, and the rears were the first to get this upgrade??. Strangely, however, the rear brake hose is the same part # right thru??.

Soooo, a cradle WITH the pipes and brass "T" unit should all bolt/plumb up.

The handbrake cable "clevis" on the LH caliper is different between XJ-S and Saloons, NO IDEA why, Jags sense of humour I suggest. One is a split collar on the caliper arm (cable has a "ball" at the end), and the other is a clevis with drop thru pin, and I forget which is which, but easily adapted with a swig of something tasty and outside the box thinking.

This is Aussie market info, and the rest of the world, mainly USA, did get other ratios. I think??

Default Swig of something tasty it is!

Nice bottle of Cab merlot to taste, always gets the mind off the little things that slow us down.
Got rear mufflers off today with the help of oxy. Really, flame is the last thing I want near my series 1(lol). Will try to drop cradle tomorrow, got a local guy with a truckload of Jaguar experience coming Monday to give me some pointers,he thinks the damage may not be as bad as the pics suggest. Will hold off on buying parts until he gives me his opinion.
There will be be plenty of outside the box engineering if I have my way as I like to use what I have available and save my$$$, fabricate when I can. As long as outside appearance still original.

Default Here is the damage

Got the cradle out today, not as big a job as it looked. May have been easier with a second set of hands.
It looked a bit daunting, but all went fairly smooth.

That's had recent work to at least shocks / springs / metalastics by the look of it.

Much better than I was expecting.

Yep, much better than I expected too.
Previous owner said he did rotors, pads and bushes etc. He had the rear end out as I saw pic of it in his driveway with no cradle in there.

pulling stuff off it tomorrow, damage is limited to cradle, hand brake cable and a couple of brake hoses. No fire damage to under body, all fire was contained inside cradle.

The hardest part of the removal was separating tie sections of exhaust pipe.

Had John, a retired Jaguar mechanic and tech teacher come over today, arrived tools in hand ready for a full assault on the XJ6. I was expecting some advice on how to attack the rebuild. Instead I have stripped brakes and diff, know exactly what I need to replace and all in 2 1/2 hours. Would have taken me days, and i would have said the diff was ok. Output shaft brearings shot, felt notchey turning the pinion. A real gentleman.
Suspension is all good, so news not too bad.

Default Jagdaim to the rescue

After 2 days of calling on local suppliers and web searches Jagdaim, Victoria,Australia have come up tops with all parts prices and availability except for 2 bearings.
Total of $600 +/- a few bucks in parts through them, from other sources my cost was anywhere from $900 up to $1600 with postage etc. And from about ten different people.
I got my output shaft bearings from the US, I will be getting the rest from Jagdaim when finances allow(Bonneville will have to wait for chain and sprockets for a bit).

Thanks to Grant Francis, best advice/right price again.(Jagdaim)

All that soot and extinguisher powder is very deceiving, and my inexperience with the car.
Probably about 30 hours of my time(I got plenty) as well.
The help I have had makes all the difference, a lot of bits I would have replaced that 3 mechanics who looked at the car said leave as is. Between them more than 100 years worth of knowledge bouncing off my garage walls so to speak. Who am I to argue!
Insurance excess was going to be $600 anyway, now I get to play with the tools and learn more about my car,in some ways I see that as a bonus. Still would have preferred to finish making my spring compressor and spend the $600 on the front end.

Default Decided to bite the bullet

After playing around working out which parts I could leave on while touching up the paint on the cradle I found a couple of loose bolts and cross threaded nuts. So instead of leaving diff and shocks in and control arms in place I have stripped the lot to check every nut and bolt.
Start paint stripping tomorrow.

Default 12 hours of paint stripper

Feels like I'm finally making progress now some parts are heading in the finished direction.

Bad habit of mine...once it hits the garage floor I can't help myself. It's got to be A1 before I put it back. My wife thinks I like to create more work for myself to stay in the garage.(she might know me well after 23 years)

I did listen to the dawn service on the radio while I was paint stripping,it would be un-Australian to be up at 5am on Anzac day and not listen.

Can't say the same about the hobby fund though. Draining the funds that should be directed at the front end or the bike.
