Tell me about it, when I first bought it I said "that red has got to go" until I realised the work involved. The fire gave me a good reason to get rid of the red and the metallic purple tie plate.

That's impressive.
Looks better than mine did in 1976! Rain and salt killed the rear panel and the quarter panels very quickly in the UK although the IRS was almost indestructible.

Graham, That enlarged pic in your post makes the rear tyres look really fat. They do hit the guards on speed humps. What should the standard tyre size be, These are Maxxis 245/60R15 with the standard rims widened,ans michelin 215's on the front.

Robert, Thanks for the kind words. Yep I feel the work has paid off and earned the Jag permanent spot in the fleet(I think we have a healthy respect for each other now). The extinguisher is new,that is one thing I don't believe in repairing since I had one fail at work about 10 years ago and had to run to get another one during an alcohol fire(100% IPA, not the beer overheating)

I was a bit worried about the diff since I have never done a diff before(have worked on power transmissions and gear boxes on stationary machinery before though,sort of similar). But diff was quiet, I think it was a bit noisy before.

My wife still insists on calling it "fireball".

The OE tyres were Dunlop SP Sport 205/70VR15 but these have long been obsolete.

Not a bad thing as I could never get more than 12K miles out of a set!

The profile difference might explain the speedo discrepancy. But I do like the 245's on the back.
Due for new rears soon,will look for 245/70 profile.

 

Series ones look nice with Wire wheels 15x7 be perfect cheap on tyres as well LOL

 

Wire wheels are way too hard to keep looking good on a daily driver, It's bad enough having a bike with wire wheels.

I picked up second hand cable today off a wreck 5 minutes from home for $10, rest of the car is pretty well shot, Holden interior, floor and panels rusted , sills rusted, holden mags, front end ans IRS usable but really rusty.(sounds like a UK car)

I will fit handbrake cable tomorrow, then everything works on the car except aircon.

 

Not sure if akebono make pads for that model they are dustless
Got them on my XJR6 and the wife's Jeep wheels never get dirty my Xj8X350 is nearly due for rotors and pads going to get cryoed rotors and akebono pads for it love clean wheels

You can get dustless pads for bikes as well I just fitted organics to my scooter wheels

I did use a different set on the front rotor though just not sure with bikes like strong feel in the from but the back wheel was always the dirtiest now clean even after 3 months

Sorry to hear about your troubles with your XJ6. Regarding my comment about SE Queensland being a bit like Florida but with hills, I was thinking mostly about the weather. But then how about Bribie Island? Flat as a board!

 

You're right about Bribie Is, I fish the beach often and use the inland sand tracks through White Patch for a bit of 4x4 fun on the way home.
Qld is a great place to live.

Took XJ6 for a mothers day "Sunday drive" yesterday. Had all sorts of shifting problems which I assumed were vacuum related,wearing a white shirt so couldn't investgate too much on the side of the road. It was changing eventually.
Found a split the vacuum pipe where it connects between manifold take off point and pipe to trans, it was hose clamped on but swollen to about twice its normal diameter(probably from fluid as it had a faulty modulatoer when I go it). Replaced it with fuel hose,all good after that.

Maybe this car should stay home on Sundays,always has problems when I take my wife out in it. Ran fine the previous 5 days in a row.

 

Now ya know, Clarke, ya can't blame the car for deferred maintenance and neglect of the PO.

Besides. Just think of the service your wife performs regarding the car. Would you rather she's with you when something gives trouble, or someone important, whose opinion actually matters to you; a business contact for example?

The wife being in the car seems to be the common denominator.....
The relationship between a man and his car/bike is a strange one....
We tend to spend a lot of time taking care of them, the Sunday bath, regular services and tune-ups, meticulously maintaining her tire pressures etc, and at the slightest problem we come running back to them to spend even more time and energy with them. To us men the car is almost a living entity and yes, we love them.... even if it is a love hate relationship.

I am guessing the Cat is jealous.

Hi Robert, simple solution to the problem this time. Handbrake playing up,sorted today.
Yep,looks like wife has to go(lol). Nah, they both got to stay. I'll have to just deal with both of their problems when they arise.

 

It's official now,my wife's tag of "Fireball" has officially stuck(to the rego plate holder,that is).
According to wikpedia she has accepted the XJ6 as another long term garage dweller.
"A nickname is often considered desirable, symbolising a form of acceptance, but can sometimes be a form of ridicule"

 

It could also be a warning of her intentions!
