temporary water pump fix?

temporary water pump fix?
Im still trying to source a water pump for the show season but in Ireland all i get is shoulder shrugs or rubbing hands in glee from parts suppliers. If you dont have a 2ltr diesel x type then forget about it here.
Anyways i have to use my series 3 next week for a 50 mile round trip and the pump is leaking from the inspection hole on the pulley indicating seal failure. I ran a bottle of Holts Seal It through the cooling system and the leak is now near non existent, its now losing maybe a egg cup in an hour running at idle in the garage. I presume the pump is still doing its job and this temporary fix will see me safely on my way until a pump is sourced that doesnt cost more than the car is worth? Or will pump fail spectacularly on me very soon?
As i say, the car is running well temperature is steady, low coolant warning light remains off and all appears ok? Opinions much appreciated folks.

Tis a luck of the draw issue. As yo cooling, just be prepared with extra coolant to keep the level up. it may get messy, but the engine will be safe as long as it has coolant.
Even if the pump seal leaks badly, it will likely continue to circulate coolant and that is it's function.
The problem is that as the pump shaft not only has an impeller to suppiort, it also has the mass of the fan. And, that is a huge load.
So, wear will increase exponentialy. Not good.
if your 50 mile voyage does not include a lot of stop and go and is at road speeds, ie 50 mph or retter, I'd consider removing the fan and it's clutch.
Whatever happens, don't push it hot, it will not be good.
Carl.

As Carl say, it's a luck issue. Some people have it, some don't
What you call an 'inspection hole' is often called a 'weep hole'. If the amount of coolant coming from the hole is indeed nothing more than a 'weep' than I wouldn't give the matter much more than a shrug of the shoulders. It might be years before it develops into an actual dripping leak.
If you're already at the 'dripping stage', well.... good luck can be pushed too far !
Cheers

Water pump at my local autozone is 198.00
USPS quoted shipping of $56.00 for international flat rate or 111.00 for any standard box.
I wont know if the pump will fit in a flat rate box until I try it. The flat rate box is 11" x 8-1/2" x 5-1/2"
I'm willing to ship it to you as I have a post office walking distance and I drive past about 3 AutoZone's every day. PM me if you're interested in this.

Cheers for the help folks, the quick fix has held up so far anyhow. On the subject of more reasonably priced pumps i find that i get quoted for complete pumps built up from each component part priced separately which pushes the price up,ie: pump housing, impeller, seals etc etc then postage here is always quoted at extortionate rates. I try pricing direct and through motor factors and by the time the initial reasonable price reaches the bottom line its not worth it. As i say the cars themselves are so cheap here it makes more sense to eventually hold out for a secondhand part.
