Timing procedures and specs
Can anyone give me the correct timing procedures and specs for this 1987 Jaguar XJ6 series lll, 4.2 engine.
# 1 is at the rear
# 6 is at the front
# 1 at the distributor is about 5pm
# 6 at the distributor is about 11am
The rotor turn counter clock wise
I need firing order and do I time it at TDC at # 6 or # 1 ?

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to XJ6 Series I, II & III forum and given it a relevant title.
Please post tech questions about your model here.

I believe I have my 1987 XJ6 4.2 timed correctly, I now believe the spark from the coil is very weak also to the plugs... unless it is dark I cannot see much spark, I also have been told I should hear a snap when it sparks, no snap, barely a sound at all. what would cause a weak spark... I've installed a new pick-up and a Amplifier not to long ago....

Well, in bright sun, it might not look like the fat blue that you need. As to the snap, if you have ears like mine, not going to hear it. Even with aids in both ears!!!
1. Clean each HT wire at the distributor, including the one from the coil. Clean the end at the coil. Clean each HT wire at the spark plug.
2. Check the plug gap. clean them. Set the gap if wider than spec.
Use your inductance timing strobe. On the coil to cap HT lead. Crank engine. Light shines? If so good, if not, bad! For fun check the plug leads the same way. If the coil to cap test failed, these will as well.
Why:
1. Lousy wires
2. Bad connections.
Wild card: use VOM. How many volts at coil +?
Do and check back. I or another will respond.
Loved Ventura when I worked in LA. AS my employer bonded a couple of local contractors, I helped build McGrath State Park. And in neighboring Ojai, the gym and some class rooms at Marillija Hgh school.
If only I could have figured out a way to make a living, we would have move there!!!
Even if the trips were for business, I enjoyed them a lot.
