The original specification was Type "G" but that's been obsolete for ages, being replaced by Type "F" or Type "FA".
If you want a slighty softer shift ....might not be a good thing on an old trans.....use Dexron III. Otherwise use the F or FA.
Not sure about the noise. Hvae a good look at the transmission mounts though.
Cheers

LOL! Love it! I learn something new every day.
So I checked my transmission fluid. It was 1/2 qt low. I sometimes have smokey exhaust, and the transmission is a little jerky on upshift or downshift. The Haynes manual talks about a ruptured Vacuum control unit diaphram being the cause of these symptoms. Would anyone know where this unit is located and whats involved in repairing this??

Thanks Doug!
Your right! The Haynes manual is really confusing and often misleading. I appreciate your insight and experience.
The smoke is just normal grey smoke, and only for a second when the engine is first started. I changed the plugs last weekend and they all looked perfect with just a little tan coating on each.
I added transmission fluid. It was 1/2 qt low. I have not heard that noise since adding fluid.
