V12; Removing the exhaust downpipes?
Hi all
I have two questions;
1) To lift out the engine/transmission do I have to remove the exhaust downpipes first? (The rest of exhaust system is removed)
2) My problem is that the downpipes are stuck on the manifolds. (I got the nuts off but not more). It like they are welded….Do you have any good tips how to separate the downpipe and manifolds without getting crazy or breaking anything? Removing manifolds directly from cylinder head seems even more impossible...
thanks
Marcus

Hi, unfortunately you will need to get those downpipes off if you want to lift the engine out. The sealing rings seem to corrode onto the manifolds so a bit of heat at the join might help but normally a few sharp blows in various directions on the downpipe from underneath will suffice. A length of scaffolding pipe inserted into the downpipe to get a bit of leverage can also help , you just need to break that seal .
Dont even think about trying to get the manifolds off with the downpipes still attached, its bad enough getting them off with the engine in the car with them removed!
As you already have the inlet manifolds removed another option would be to drop the front subframe with the engine attached in which case you can leave the downpipes as they are, obviously this would depend on space and lifting equipment available, good luck.
