Waht is potential costs owning XJ6
I am looking to replace my 93 Lincoln with 96 XJ6. Took me awhile to even consider the car, but none the less. I drove one today with 104k on it, car was smoked in. been a smoker in the past it gets to me even more than to nonsmoking person. But my goal was to see how it rides. My conclusion was not a whole lot better (as I was told to expect) than my Lincoln. Not sure if the Jag has an air suspension or not, but it feel pretty similar ride wise but much better handling wise.
The biggest concern at this point would be the maintenance/repair cost. I realize the ridiculousness of my question, but... what is expected average yearly cost to own the Jag like this? You guys know what can and most likely will go wrong with this kind of miles on the car. BTW, i hate when they clean the engine comp. so well you can't tell what's going on, so yea it looks very clean that does not tell me anything.
Oh yea, also what's expected mileage out of the engine/transmission? I know my Lincoln will go another 200+k with the way I take care of it, but some cars just don't.
Thanks!

Check out the "Buying an XJR" thread over in the "X300" section:

Bear in mind that a standard XJ6 will have the ZF transmission and not the 4L80E transmission used in the XJRs. Most everything else will apply. The ZF transmissions are very long lasting....like the Jag engines are.
As you alluded to it is difficult to estimate the annual upkeep expense on a 14 y/o car with 100k miles. Just about any used car will have a few items needing attention. I dunno....if forced to guess I'd say plan on spending a couple grand to fix all the things the previous owner didn't bother to take care of and then $500 upkeep/year thereafter.
Cheers

I agree with Dougs statement. I had a 1990 xj6 with 296k miles. No valve tappet, no smoke, it was as silky smooth as the day it came from the factory. The only reason it didnt go longer was because I was rear ended and the car was totaled. The AJ6 engine is pretty much bulletproof. The engine in the 96 jags is a variant of the AJ6 engine (dubbed the AJ16 if Im not mistaken). These engines can do an easy 400k when maintained.

XJ 6 Maintenance
My experience ...Recently purchased a 1997 XJ6 L and took the car in for a complete diagnosis. I ended up doing some front end suspension/bushing work (that I was aware would be necessary), and then we discovered that the head gasket was leaking. Between those items and doing a full service I spent $2,000...for full piece of mind and now knowing the car is in great shape.

what about 98
I realize that 95-97 XJ6 is the best choice, too bad there's not too many of them around. Found one 98 XJ8 with problematic tensioner.
I forgot the year when I was able to work on the engines myself, but if it's not too much of a problem and otherwise car is good to pursue..... Is it worth looking at XJ8s?
Thanks!
