What is this? In a 1974 XJ12, both front seats. They were unplugged when I removed seats? Any reason why?

Could be a pressure switch for the seat belt alarm. Are there corresponding wires under the seat coming out of the carpet? Plug the wires together (if proper connectors) and see if something happens that didn't happen before.

I haven't tried it yet but i think you're probably right! that's why they would've been unplugged.
