On early fuel injected engines the mechanic was the scan tool. There are a few key sensors and a experienced mechanic would simply interpet the symptions and then check the relevant sensor for the proper value ranges. The XJ40 was delayed and Jaguar was still using a FI technolgy from the early 80's in the soon to be replaced series 3. The key items to check for engine running are good spark, coolant temp sensor, fuel pressure, injector pulse and the Air flow meter. If the AFM is bad the car should idle with it disconnected. For drivabilty you need to check the Air flow meter, the O2 sensor, coolant temp sensor and the throttle positions sensor.
