I have it on good authority that there was no clear coat on the xj6 s1.
when you repainted your S1, dud you go original with base coat & gloss off the gun, or did you go 2 oak with a clear ?
Using just base coat , it would be very easy to fix repairs and avoid the 2 oak nonsense..... could even do it all yourself
appreciate your vieww,
Peter

The base colour in Clear-over-Base paints, (at least here in Europe), is water-based. The clear coat is solvent based. Solvent-based base coats may be available to the refinish trade to make repairs easier. Much depends on whether this is a DIY job, or a shop job. If DIY, I'd go for a single coat acrylic like Mekon. Final coats can be mixed with acrylic clear and should give an excellent finish.

Perhaps the biggest question is can an individual even buy paint? Where I live,I have to have a autobody or painters journeyman's certificate to be able to buy paint, if I'm just a member of the general public they won't sell it to me.
Last time I was able to buy paint it was close to $300/litre by the time I bought base, clear and the reducers/activators. It ends up being cheaper to do the prep myself and then send the car to a bodyshop for final colour painting.

Seems that the biggest industry in the western world at present is regulation. Not surprising the Chinese are taking over.

Mekon
yes im in the outer shirts of sydney, South west.
My car that i picked up last week was delivered on 15 June 1973 in the UK, the original owner had KMP speedo installed at the factory as he knew he was coming to Australia.
So its a UK speced car overall i suppose.
I know it has the S2 steering wheel, and the lamp built into the rear bumper.
Many things to discover on it.
As for painting, i think i will prepare it my self, primer sand etc and whether or not i do the final or send it out i will decide. Certainly your '73 looks awesome in that red.
We all know Red cars go faster !

I haven't got as far as paint. Here in the UK, we can buy paint stripper. That is we can buy cans with the words paint stripper on the outside so long as the liquid inside has absolutely no effect on paint. There are parts of my Mk2 where the paint seems to be a lot thicker than the steel .... .
